Shape of Cities

I just returned from San Francisco, and that was quite a worthwhile trip. I love the intricate densities and layers that make a city dynamic. It reminded me of Melbourne, so dense in the core, but without a doubt spreading to accommodate lower densities in the suburbs. But, in all it was the mass transit, Muni and Bart that allowed me to fall in love with that area, but it is not without fault.

www.amrivlin.com/gallery/SF has some images of my brief trip to the Bay Area.

I actually stayed in San Jose 40 miles south of the bay. One would think Bart would connect all areas of the bay, however San Jose Light Rail was separated by 10 miles. I took a bus and was on my way. Returning I took CalTrain into San Jose to the main Light Rail, and Airport station, it stops service at 11:30 PM, the last CalTrain arrived at 1:30 AM. What gives, who makes this policy? I intend to discuss this later in my Senior Project Paper.

I met up with a future CSU Pomona student, and I was given the opportunity to share my thoughts on different programs. KSU vs CSU... I explained the facilities at CSU are a horrid mess. KSU Studio space was superior almost even to my studio at Land Concern. After much debate of design and planning topics we viewed a film, "The End of Suburbia" www.endofsuburbia.com WOW I loved that film, and it was so humorous that we could both have a beer and sit down and get excited about a movie that bashed the suburban planning tactics of the 1950's. I highly suggest this film be viewed by everyone in High School, whether connected to design or not. Gosh, I will collect my thoughts on this film later. But read on if you would like to watch it for yourself. I passed this information on to anyone I could.

This is a documentary about the inefficiencies of our American lifestyle in the suburbs and a bit of the historical background of highways, mass transit, and the suburb. I highly recommend spending an hour watching this. It is pretty entertaining and even a bit frightening. It is formatted for the video ipod, but will work on any PC or Mac with Quicktime. Thanks to Deanne for showing me this film, great selection. I would love to entertain any discussions that emerge after viewing this.

Another recommendation, Syriana.
